"Congressman Bruce Morrison didn’t just provide visas, he provided futures. My family’s future exists because of that opportunity."
I received my Morrison Visa in 1993 and traveled to the United States on January 4, 1994. I arrived in New York before eventually settling in Virginia, where I still live today.
Before moving to America, I had hoped to become an army cadet in the Irish Army, but that path did not work out. Instead, I found myself working in a clerical position at a printing company in Ireland. When the company closed down, the future felt uncertain. Like so many others at the time, I struggled to see real opportunities ahead.
Coming to the United States changed that almost immediately.
One of the biggest moments for me in those early months was getting my first apartment and buying a car shortly after arriving. At the time, those things felt completely out of reach back in Ireland. It gave me a sense of independence and possibility that I had never experienced before.
The hardest part of moving was homesickness. Being away from family and everything familiar was difficult, especially in those first years. What helped me through it was my faith and finding community. I became involved with organizations like the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus, which gave me friendship, support, and a strong sense of belonging.
The opportunities the Morrison Visa created for me were life-changing. I attended college at night while building my life in America. Over the years, I got married and raised three amazing children.
One of my proudest moments is knowing that one of my children will be commissioned into the U.S. Army in two years.
When I look back now, I realize the Morrison Visa meant everything to me. I love Ireland deeply, and it will always be home, but the life I built in America is something I never could have imagined for myself back then. Congressman Bruce Morrison didn’t just provide visas, he provided futures. My family’s future exists because of that opportunity.
