I received my Morrison Visa in 1993 while living in County Clare, Ireland. When I moved to the United States, I settled in Miami, Florida.

Having just finished college, I had heard about the Morrison Visa, which allowed recipients to work legally in the U.S. Like many before us, we were eager to emigrate. I was at the perfect age and stage in life to seek adventure and excitement abroad. Many in my age group were also leaving Ireland due to the lack of work opportunities at the time.

“One of the biggest adjustments was the drastic difference in weather. The Florida heat was unlike anything I had ever experienced.”

I vividly remember stepping out of the airport on the day of arrival—my friend and I thought we were still indoors because of the sudden blast of heat. We quickly realized the woolly jumpers we had packed had no place in Miami! The sunshine and reliably blue skies completely changed our lifestyle, making it so different from home.

Finding work and learning to drive on the highways right away was daunting. Fortunately, we had friends who welcomed us and helped us find our feet, making the transition much easier.

Although my U.S. emigration story was not as long-lived as I had expected, living in Miami gave me an exciting start to my working life and career. I have incredible memories of independence and fun, experiencing a beautiful climate and making friends with people from all over the world.

The Morrison Visa Program provided significant freedom and potential for people’s lives and careers. It opened doors that otherwise may have remained closed, giving so many—including myself—the opportunity to explore, grow, and build something new.
