"The Morrison Visa didn’t just give me permission to stay. It gave me the freedom to grow, to take risks, and to build a life rooted in hope."
I received my Morrison Visa in 1992, and I still remember how happy I was when the news came through. At the time, I was living in Watertown, Massachusetts, part of that vibrant Irish scene that lit up Boston in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The city felt like an extension of home, filled with familiar accents, endless cups of tea, and sessions that lasted long into the night.
“Back in Ireland, I had what my gran proudly called a “pensionable” job, steady, secure, and on paper, a great opportunity. But I was bored.”
I had an itch to see the world, to experience something bigger. When a friend suggested trying America for six months, it felt like just the right kind of leap. That short trial turned into a life.
In those early days, the culture shock was real, and sometimes, a little funny. I still remember standing in a supermarket aisle, overwhelmed by the wall of salad dressings, trying to pick one. And the bread? Let’s just say it was a far cry from the batch loaf I grew up with.
After some time in Boston, I married and eventually moved out to Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Even now, I think I might be the only Irish person in town. But it’s become home. It’s where I built a life, raised a family, and found my place in the world.
I’ve now worked in the local school district for over 18 years. Being around children every day has taught me so much, about resilience, kindness, and how to meet people where they are. Living here has shifted the way I see the world. I’m more empathetic, more open. This country has shaped me in ways I never expected.
“But the thing I’m most proud of, by far, is raising my three sons. They’re my world.”
Everything I’ve built here, every choice I made, it was all for them. The Morrison Visa gave me the chance to give them a life I never could have imagined for myself.
The Morrison Visa didn’t just give me permission to stay. It gave me the freedom to grow, to take risks, and to build a life rooted in hope. I’ll never stop being grateful for that.
